Decorum and pleasure
1600 - 1651
In an atmosphere of gaming and tobacco smoke, amusement, sex and brawling went hand in hand. In the foreground a game of “tag”: someone in the group taps you on the back and you have to guess who. The hand on the woman’s back points to cheating at cards. A girl peers over the shoulder of the militiaman with his orange sash to look at his cards. The young lady playing cards on the young man’s lap has somewhat lost her sense of decorum. Paintings with the theme of a storm in the background pointed perhaps to things getting out of hand.
