Amsterdam’s glory

1662

The splendid, austere city plan was the result of collaboration between several artists and craftsmen. The publisher was Nicolaas Visscher. City architect Daniël Stalpaert was responsible for the map illustration and Nicolaes Berchem for the city profile. This illustrates how, under the watchful eye of Juno, accompanied by the magnificent peacock, and Minerva, accompanied by the wise owl, the four continents brought their riches to Amsterdam. The Blacks and the Indians in the bottom left-hand corner, stacking up the ivory and bars of silver, are striking.
