Night transport by water

1759

In the seventeenth century the Republic had a public transport system that functioned well. The trekschuiten, literally “towing barges”, even “sailed” from one city to another at night. The American draughtsman John Greenwood portrayed one such journey between Utrecht and Amsterdam. Many passengers used the journey to snooze. Left in the corner, however, a pair of lovers very much awake.
