The anatomy lesson of doctor Deyman

1656

The recumbent figure is slightly raised with its feet facing us. The genitals are covered but the abdominal cavity lies open. This abdomen might have been the subject of a lesson the previous day. The painter captures the moment when the surgeon exposes the brains. The doctor on the left holds the top of the skull. The membranes underneath fall to the right and left of the head. Joan Deyman dissected the 22 year old condemned man Joris Fonteijn. This painting was originally much larger. A large part was lost in a fire.
