Van Oostsanen: The First Dutch Master is a three-part exhibition - a triptych - with shows at three different locations. Amsterdam Museum, Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar and St Laurens’s church each feature a different aspect of Van Oostsanen’s life and work.
The Master and his Oeuvre
#Van Oostsanen at Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar
Alkmaar’s history is the focus at Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, the city’s recently renovated municipal museum. Here, visitors experience and discover Alkmaar’s historical and artistic heritage, presented in a contemporary, interactive display.
So what was Jacob’s connection to Alkmaar? He was an Amsterdammer, after all. In fact, Jacob had several patrons in Alkmaar and he created a remarkable ceiling painting at the city’s great church, St Laurens’s. Clearly, Jacob and Alkmaar had a special connection and his place in the city’s museum is well-earned.
While Amsterdam Museum concentrates on the city of Amsterdam in Jacob’s day, at Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar the focus is on the artist’s oeuvre. The museum presents an almost complete art-historical survey of the master’s life and work. Numerous paintings, drawings, stained-glass windows and other intriguing exhibits are presented and described.
While each item is a marvel in itself, and each has a tale to tell, perhaps the most remarkable aspect of all is that these works have been in different collections around the world for centuries and are presented now, for the first time, together on Dutch soil - even items that are rarely exhibited, if ever, are also included. All these works appear for one time only together, making this exhibition a truly unique experience.
